Farmers Guardian journalist James Huyton has clinched the coveted Institution of Agricultural Engineers (IAgrE) award for the best article or broadcast highlighting the vital role of engineering in modern food and energy production.

It was presented at the Guild’s Bangers and Beer reception at the Cereals Event on Tuesday, June 10, by IAgrE‘s chief executive Charlie Nicklin.

James Huyton’s article, ‘Is electric power a sustainable alternative for a compact loader on a livestock farm’? was published in Farmers Guardian.

Judges said the piece ‘went way beyond a ‘what car’ drive of a new model, to place it within the context of how the electric variant would fare in comparison to its conventional diesel alternative’.

They added: “A thoughtful, holistic view of how some new technology could be integrated and how the farmer could ‘live with’ an electric handler. Plus, how its use and carbon footprint would enhance the business. Practical and well thought through.”

The runner-up was James Andrews for his story, ‘Harvester lifts 70K pumpkins a day’, which was published in Farmers Weekly.
The judges said: “A well written and fascinating piece covering a bespoke solution.”

Mr Nicklin said: “IAgrE are once again pleased to offer the two awards to members of the British Guild of Agricultural Journalists. Our judges faced a tough challenge to agree a top two from the selection of fantastic articles submitted.

“Professionalism is at our core and that is what we want to see from articles where the subject matter is of a technical nature. Both articles are very different, and both offer the reader comprehensive well written coverage of the subject. Well done to both award winners.”
