Visit to the world’s longest indoor automotive test facility.
Catesby Tunnel is a recently opened test facility which makes use of the 2.7 Km long rail tunnel, the construction of which was started in 1895. It was built as part of the Great Central Railway’s London Extension and was in operational service from 1898 until 1966.
The tunnel has recently been transformed primarily for whole vehicle performance and aerodynamic testing to exploit the stable test conditions offered by the 2.7km long by 40m2 cross sectional area and constant gradient of 1:176. Catesby Tunnel is set to become the worldwide benchmark for aerodynamic testing and vehicle development. The facility is expected to attract customers from Europe and the rest of the world.
The development will enhance the capabilities of the UK vehicle industry and provide a base for the commercialisation of new technology, innovation and R&D. A science and technology park will be built adjacent to the tunnel that will bring together high tech companies allowing opportunities for collaboration and growth in the South East Midlands.
