Robotics SIG - Discussion on launch of BS 8646

The IAgrE Robotics Special Interest Group bring together representatives of the drafting committee, from small business, big business and academic to discuss the launch of the BS 8646 Use of autonomous mobile machinery in agriculture and horticulture

The code of practice is a new national guidance document on avoiding the potential hazards of AMMs on farms, especially when integrated with staffed operations. This new standard reflects the fact that the technology exists and is improving, yet some farmers may be reluctant to deploy it because of concerns about unfamiliarity, legality, safety and cost.

BS 8646 aims to dispel some of these concerns. This is a first ever national standard on this subject. It:

- Gives recommendations for the safe use of autonomous mobile machinery (AMM) in agriculture and horticulture
- Applies to ground-based AMM, including for use in greenhouses and polytunnels
- Describes a best practice safety and risk management process that can be applied to farming operations
- Provides information on instructions and training for safe operation and maintenance of AMM
- Advises on farm planning, including hazard controls and emergency preparedness

The event will be hosted by Kit Franklin, HAU and Hands Free Hectare, with panellists James Lowenburg De Boer from Harper Adams University, Rhian Griffith from Small Robot Company and another TBC.

The panel will set the scene and then open the floor to Q&A
