Lunchtime Lecture - Crop Mapping

Crop Map Explorer: A New Tool for Farming Analysis

Mike Wooding & Tim Pearson from Remote Sensing Applications Consultants Ltd share their knowledge, including an introduction on how they utilise satellite data for crop mapping as well as details of CEH/RSCC Land Cover Plus Crops and the new Crop Map Explorer products.

Crop Map Explorer enables visualisation and analysis of the full archive of our crop maps, plus data on annual winter cover, slope and distance to water - without the need for GIS expertise. With maps and graphical summaries for Water Framework Directive river catchments and administrative areas (counties, districts, parishes) and unparalleled intelligence on crop rotation history, the dashboards provide valuable insight on land management and sustainable farming practices.

The lecture will present the Land Cover plus Crops products and, using the dashboards, explore ways in which this time series field-level information can provide deeper understanding of agricultural practices for a range stakeholders.

Remote Sensing Applications Consultants Limited is a Hampshire-based company that, for over 30 years, has been addressing genuine needs in the agriculture and forestry sectors with novel applications of satellite data. Working with the UK Centre for Ecology and Hydrology, we have produced a detailed crop map of Great Britain for the past eight years that provides an excellent record of crop rotations in nearly two million fields. We also map over-winter vegetation cover for these same fields and use satellite data for precision farming.
