Biochar, produced via controlled pyrolysis of biomass, has gained substantial momentum in recent years, driven by voluntary carbon removal markets and high-integrity credits that reward permanent carbon storage. While carbon finance accelerates adoption, biochar's true value lies in its multifaceted agronomic benefits, which are essential for long-term viability, circularity, and integration.
Juan is an Agricultural Engineer with a PhD in fungal genetics and a long-standing member of the IAgrE for nearly 20 years. He has dedicated over 15 years to biochar production technologies and practical agronomic applications. Currently, he serves as Head of Strategic Research at Invica Industries, where he leads innovative work on biocarbon solutions, including large-scale pyrolysis plants and waste-to-biochar conversion for carbon sequestration in the UK.
